General Submission Requirements (For Undergraduate and Graduate Submissions):

  • 1 " margins
  • Double spaced
  • Pages numbered
  • Title and Applicant name listed and centered on the first page
  • 12 font - Times New Roman
  • The essay should be between 500-700 words
  • Free of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors

Undergraduate (Associates or Baccalaureate)

  • You are a student currently enrolled in a CAHIIM accredited (or candidacy status) Associate or Bachelor’s degree program in Health Information Management/Technology
  • You are a resident of New Jersey or attending a CAHIIM accredited program in NJ.
  • You are a member of AHIMA with New Jersey as your designated CSA
  • You have completed one (1) full semester and a minimum of 12 credits in the program
  • You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the end of the last semester completed.

In one essay address the following questions. The essay should be between 500-700 words:

  1. Why did you decide to major in Health Information Management?
  2. Where do you see the profession going in the future?
  3. Where do you see yourself five years in the future?

Graduate (Masters or Doctorate)

  • You are a student currently enrolled in a CAHIIM accredited Master’s degree program in Health Information Management or Health Informatics in any state or a doctoral program in a discipline that will enhance your role in HIM
  • You are a resident of New Jersey or attending an educational program in NJ.
  • You are a member of AHIMA with New Jersey as your designated CSA
  • You have completed one (1) full semester and a minimum of 12 credits in the program
  • You must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at the end of the last semester completed.

In one comprehensive essay of 900-1000 words please answer the following questions:

  1. Explain the importance of health information management/informatics in the healthcare delivery system. OR
  2. Explain the most important issues facing HIM currently.
  3. For Ph.D. students, describe how your doctoral degree will contribute to your role and the field of HIM

By applying for an award, you are authorizing the NJHIMA Scholarship Board to verify your GPA and any other eligibility requirements as necessary through contact with your Program Chair.

In the interest of fairness and neutrality, your identity and the program you are attending will not be revealed during the selection process. The NJHIMA Scholarship Board is comprised of past-presidents and executive board members of NJHIMA. Only the Chair of the Board will know your identity and program, and the Chair will not participate in the selection process.

If you are awarded the scholarship, you will be required to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours in an NJHIMA activity during the year following your acceptance of the scholarship. Examples are:

  • Assisting at the registration desk at a quarterly meeting (must be available at 8:00 am on a weekday in Princeton)
  • Assisting with a committee or project
  • Assisting with the preparation for the NJHIMA Annual Meeting

  • Applications received after the deadline will not be reviewed.
  • Applications missing information will not be reviewed.
  • Applications with less than 500-700 (for undergraduate) and 900-1000 words (for graduate) will not be reviewed.
